January: arrive early and be entertained in the streets of the city during the International Buskers Festival. the beginning of the school year is the time to choose six subjects from 40 available to Year 11 and 12 students. English is the only compulsory study. It is summer and Surfing School starts for learning to ride the waves at local beaches. Outdoor Education students begin the basics in kayaking. Music students start regular instrument lessons and join one of the many groups, including Jazz, Orchestra or Choir. March: the festivals are happening in the city. A big night is Classical Sparks: orchestral music with fireworks. Summer sport is well underway in the school with Volleyball, Cycling, Tennis, Touch Rugby and Futsal being offered. April: international students organize our International Week; highlights being the food festival, the sports tournament and international dance displays. May: return from autumn vacation and start winter sport, with Football, Rugby, Basketball, Badminton, Squash and others you may wish to try for the first time. June: the end of the first semester and the Mid Year Report shows your academic results for half a year. You will be surprised at the successes you have already and you may want to try the national examinations at the end of the year. Perhaps graduating in New Zealand will take you directly into university. July: the Italians are coming, as are new arrivals from Germany, Brazil, France and Latin America. It is the beginning of the second semester and more than 20 international students start a five months stay at the school. There are students from Asian countries as well, including Korea, Japan, China and Thailand. August: skiing and snowboarding is underway, and the school club is regularly making the two hour trip to Mt Hutt for weekend fun. There are discounted day trips for everyone while serious competitors may join the regional and national championships in the school team. September: it’s time to look at New Zealand. During the two week spring vacation, there are trips to make, further south to Queenstown or to the North Island, maybe a tropical island like Fiji is possible. Examinations are held at school but not taken by recently arrived international students; alternative activities are organized for one week. October: school is back for the final six weeks and summer sport is on again. Senior students in the school are hard working towards national examinations next month, but international students can have more fun. Daylight saving starts now and long evenings allow for plenty of outdoor activities, like rock climbing, cycling or running. November: the school year is coming to an end but there is one week of organized activities around the city during national examinations, and then, one week touring the South Island. There is sea kayaking and white water rafting to enjoy during the five day bus trip, as well as the company of school friends from countries all over the world. December: maybe you will return to the European winter, but for those who stay in New Zealand there are summer activities like camping, Christmas outdoors, beach and sun bathing and for some, part time work is a real possibility. The “academic year abroad” passes quickly and all our international students pronounce it as “the best year of my life”.
